Christopher Strachey: Recollections of His Influence

چکیده
My early research was inspired by the mathematical semantics of Scott and Strachey. Two such topics, recounted in this paper, were the fixed-point analysis of pointer loops and the expressibility of a style of functional programming introduced by Barron and Strachey.

Christopher Strachey and the Development of CPL
Chrisopher Strachey was the most significant contributor to the design and implementation of the programming language CPL. At the time there was little understanding of the complexities of computer language design and how type systems could cope with lists and the kinds of structures needed to represent, for instance, parse trees. The CPL project cannot be regarded as being successful since it ...
متن کاملA Foreword to 'Fundamental Concepts in Programming Languages'
Christopher Strachey’s paper on Fundamental Concepts in Programming Languages is being published here for the first time. Written in the autumn of 1967, it is based on the lectures given by Strachey at an International School in Computer Programming, held in Copenhagen in August 1967. Strachey intended the paper to be published in the proceedings of the School—but the proceedings never material...

متن کاملLogic and Learning: Turing's legacy
Turing's best known work is concerned with whether universal machines can decide the truth value of arbitrary logic formulae. However, in this paper it is shown that there is a direct evolution in Turing's ideas from his earlier investigations of computability to his later interests in machine intelligence and machine learning. Turing realised that machines which could learn would be able to av...
